Tektome’s Automated Design AI Revolutionizes Restroom Layout Planning
Tektome Corporation (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Naoki Kitamura; hereafter “Tektome”) has successfully collaborated with Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. in a pioneering experiment to automate restroom layout design using cutting-edge AI technology.
The verification experiment utilized image generation AI based on deep learning, enabling the automatic creation of multiple restroom layouts. Following the successful outcome, Toyo Construction has launched the AI-powered tool for restroom layout design under the name “AI Design Assistant.” Tektome plans to expand on these results to support automated architectural design across broader domains.
Project Background
The construction industry faces challenges such as long working hours and a persistent labor shortage. In architectural design, layout planning for residential buildings, logistics warehouses, and commercial facilities is a labor-intensive process that demands creative and tailored solutions for each project. This complexity often delays the development of optimal layouts.
To address these challenges, Tektome and Toyo Construction began collaborating in 2021 to conduct a demonstration experiment on automated restroom layout design. The goal was to enhance designers’ creativity by leveraging AI-generated layout proposals.
Project Details and Outcomes
This experiment combined traditional genetic algorithms with deep learning methods. The AI was trained on approximately 1,400 design drawings created by Toyo Construction’s experienced designers. This approach enabled the generation of human-like designs without the need for extensive rule programming, as the AI learned from the patterns and preferences of seasoned professionals.
Using user-specified input parameters—such as layout boundaries, gender-specific area assignments, the number of large urinals, standard urinals, toilet bowl sizes, and other specifications—the AI successfully generated multiple viable restroom layout options.
These achievements led Toyo Construction to implement the system using Tektome’s AI platform, officially launching the “AI Design Assistant” for restroom layouts.
Future Outlook
Building on the success of this initiative, Tektome plans to enhance and broaden the capabilities of its automatic layout design AI throughout FY2023 and beyond. Future applications will include logistics warehouses, office spaces, and medical facilities, extending the platform’s impact across the architectural design industry.
